Varifocal contact lenses – more than one power in the lens

Presbyopia is a condition that affects almost all of us as we age. We need varifocal lenses that provide visual support for near, far and intermediate distances. For contact lenses, either varifocal or multifocal, a good solution can be found. Different versions are available. The simplest solution is to combine contact lenses for distance vision with reading glasses. Or by using a monovision approach, where one eye is corrected for near vision with a contact lens and the other for far vision. Habit and the brain do the rest. However, your three-dimensional vision may be slightly affected and the difference between your right and left vision should not be too great.

The “Synchronous System” is based on contact lenses that alternately combine the individual powers for near and far vision in a single lens. Different designs are also used. The two powers for near and far vision are always distributed in a ring in the varifocal contact lens. In some designs, the distance range is in the middle and the near vision zone is on the outside. There are even lenses with rings for the transition zone in between or with alternating powers. You can see both powers at the same time. Our brains are used to seeing the “correct” images for near and far distances.

The point is: you need to try and seek expert advice. Not everyone can adapt to this type of lenses.
